First day proper.

A grey start to the day. Packed up to beat the rain that never arrived then breakfast in the bar at the campsite while we charged phones. Coffee situation in France still not good. On our way at 9.30.
Lots of rolling hills, views of the coast and old lookouts. The view behind us of yesterday's walk.

And a view into the future....

Just as we hit the milestone we had agreed for a lunch of 'last night's leftovers' we stumbled onto 'Au vieux Jack' which was both welcome and busy. An hour later and an omelette heavier we set off again.

Today's date: 2.7.20
Weather: sunny intervals and a strong breeze. Nice weather for walking.
Steps: 47,700
Distance: 30.01km
Climbing: 426m

The Via runs in from the coast in a mostly easterly direction before turning south below Calais. Many people fast-forward due south from Calais, but they miss some great scenery.

It was a lovely walk through open fields and below a ridgeline of wind turbines. They really are mesmerising up close.

We failed to get a stamp in any churches, but did see Joan of Arc. We also saw a really impressive 'Thunderbirds' tractor that deployed arms before sprinting through the field.
Arrived at the campsite in Licques just after 6pm. Licques is a nice village with a few shops and a very imposing church.

Met another pilgrim - Joe - who is cycling south. He had loads of recommendation for other blogs. I'm not going to check them out in case they are too good and I give up.

Camping
We are staying at a nice, modern campsite and they had a pilgrim stamp. Disappointingly their bar was shut which meant a 2k round trip back to the village shop to get something to eat. Not the best end to a 30k walk.
It's very quiet and because it is mid-summer it is light until late and we had a picnic by our tent. We can hear cows from our tent.
