A lot of walking for a rest day

An easy day so that we can explore Laon and do some admin.

A good night's rest but a bit blowy this morning so packing up was exciting.

Today's date: 20.7.20

Weather: sunny

Steps: 22,240

Distance: 16.33 km

Climbing: 1004 m

Walked up the long and steep hill into Laon. Grabbed stamps at the tourist office by the Cathedral and then had a very disappointing coffee at the cafe opposite. French cappucino served with a shrug.

The Notre Dame Cathedral of Laon is at the heart of the City but is not overbearing. It is a huge building but hides its size until you are inside. There is a large section devoted to pilgrims and it was hard not to feel a bit more worthy than the other tourists. The sin of pride.

The town centre is full of alleys and fun to explore. We stopped for a nice lunch at Cafe le Vert, but most shops were closed as it is Monday.

The via runs through the city to the Abbey of Saint Martin at the other end of the hilltop.

There are great views over the flat countryside on all sides.

In the afternoon we followed the via around the base of the hill. The via runs past our hotel on the 'functional' side of town. There is a 24x7 pizza vending machine amongst other attractions.

Hotel Inn Laon

A nice clean room with a shower, wifi, power outlets to charge everything and a desk to sit at. It is a real luxury after camping for a while and because we won't need to pack up the tent we should get an early start for the long day tomorrow.

Picnic in room for supper.
