Lombardy

A short day in prospect. We had a late start and grabbed a coffee as we left Mortara. It is a nice town with some really grand houses.

The walk was more of the same, with long paths alongside ditches and sunken fields. The weather was unpleasant, being hot at humid, and with no breeze to help with the clouds and clouds of bugs.

We crossed into Lombardy yesterday and the marking of paths has definitely got worse. There's also more litter and dumped rubbish than before, but that's probably just being closer to a city (Milan).

At Tromello we stopped for a late lunch but everything was closed, so rather than walk on hungry, we caught a bus into Pavia and will jump back tomorrow.

Tromello looked pretty run-down, with nothing going on. It seems quite unpredictable along this stretch - one village will have life and interest and the next be deserted and dead.

Collegio Universitario Don Bosco - Pavia

Rather than struggle to find places to stay in the villages along this part of the Via, we have booked a room in a hostel in Pavia.

Pavia is an old University City, with lots of accomodation and places to eat. We had always planned to take a rest day here to look around. There are buses or trains to all the stage starts for the next 3 or 4 days. The other bonus is that we can leave our big rucksacks in the room and travel light.
