A gloomy day in the rain

ree

The forecast predicted rain all day so we had breakfast and resigned ourselves for a long damp descent.

The landscape was grey and rocky and we took very few pictures as it was raining so hard. We did see a cross, next to a donkey which was a bonus.

The road twists down the valley to lose height and gradually the number of buildings and trees increased and we felt less exposed.

After a few hours we came to picturesque Saint Rhemy and stopped for lunch. The hotel was very welcoming with a fire to dry our clothes. The food was great as well.

Today's date: 29.8.20

Weather: raining

Steps: 40,680

Distance: 28.37 km

Climbing: 464m - we descended about 1500m.

The rain seemed a bit lighter after lunch and we pressed on down the valley.

We walked for many km high on the side of the valley alongside a river running in a man-made channel. There were shrines and statues but nobody about.

It was misty and getting very gloomy again so we stopped in Gignod just outside Aosta and caught a bus into town. We will do the last few km tomorrow.

Maison Ville D’Aoste - Aosta

Aosta is a city at the junction of three valleys. The centre is compact and based on a grid set-out by the Romans, but it has spread up the hillsides.

The piazza and shopping streets were busy as we arrived but the weather was very cool and it is hard to believe we are in August.

We have a serviced apartment in the centre. It took a while to get access so we had a pizza while we waited.
