Sunrise.

We were up before dawn to catch the 6.45 bus from the village square. Luckily, there were already 2 bars open to provide the first coffee of the day. The kind host at the b&b had also prepared us a packed breakfast so we were well set for the day.

Today's date: 19.9.20

Weather: sunny and warm

Steps: 25,790

Distance: 16.77 km

Climbing: 457 m

We arrived back at Casola as the sun was rising. The sky brightened and the day started to warm up and disperse the mist in the valley below.

We made good time on the twisty switchback road and stopped at Cassio for breakfast.

It is the small village that has the big (closed) pilgrim hostel on this section and it looked as this village would have been a great place to stay.

The route ran mostly along the road. There were a few more cyclists today.

We continued to walk onwards and upwards with great views all around. The road often ran through woodlands and there were lots of mushrooms to be seen.

As we neared Berceto the road opened up and the speed of the many, many passing motorcycles went up. It was like walking on a racetrack so we were pleased when the via forked off the road towards Berceto.

There had been lots of Via signs all day but they redoubled on the path into Berceto. The village is really pretty and filled with cobbled streets, fountains and squares.

Even the church bells ring in a pleasing way. It is easily one of the nices places we have visited.

Casa dei Nonni - Berceto

Same pleasant b&b for a second night. For supper we went to the village locanda and ate in the garden.

Tomorrow is a long walk over the top of the pass and down the other side to as near as we can get to Pontremoli.
