To the outskirts of Besancon

ree

Today's plan was to complete a stage of the via in the morning then do the first half of the next stage into Besancon. That should give us an easy day tomorrow with plenty of time to look around.

Today's date: 13.8.20

Weather: sunny

Steps: 38,800

Distance: 27.01 km

Climbing: 449 m

Our fellow pilgrim left at 6 so we had the hostel to ourselves. We had a big breakfast and were on the road at 8. Our washing had not dried overnight so we left with laundry strapped all over our rucksacks.

We climbed out of the valley and walked in a beautiful forest all morning. There were some serious mountain bikers about and the forest made for a vast and varied playground for them.

The villages today were all prosperous and well kept and the scenery was probably the loveliest we have seen. We left the forest at Montboillon and had a coffee in Etuz.

We crossed the river Ognon into Cussey and kept going until Misery-Salines.

We crossed a TGV line and the countryside gradually merged into the outskirts of Besancon.

It seemed as if we were either climbing a hill or descending all day, but we can see the shape of the mountains beyond Besancon, so this is probably good training.

Ecole-Valentin - Ibis Budget

A standard chain hotel surrounded by shops and fast food restaurants. We are determined to use up the food we are carrying so it is leftovers for supper.
