Castles

Today we planned an easy day starting with catching the bus back towards the pass then walking the last section back to Aosta. We would then start the next stage and see how far we got before catching the train back to Aosta.

We had breakfast in the bar then caught the bus. It is free and you get on at the back so that nobody needs to approach the driver. We missed our stop to get off which added a few km to our walk, but it was all downhill so easy.

The day was clear and sunny and there were good views back towards the pass.

The density of housing gradually increased but there was still room for orchards and vineyards.

We arrived back in Aosta near the museum and the apartment and went to a neighbourhood restaurant that specialises in mushroom dishes. They were fabulous.

Today's date: 31.8.20

Weather: sunny

Steps: 40,270

Distance: 25.82 km

Climbing: 465 m

After lunch we left town through the Arch of Augustus and over the Roman bridge. The climb up the side of the valley was gentle but we were soon high above the roads and buildings on the valley floor. The path is well marked and easy to follow.

The path stays high up on the side of the valley and takes you past the ruined Chateau de Quart and Nus castle. There are views up and down the valley and of the airport.

The descent down to the valley floor was steep and we would have been very tough in the wet. We left the Via at Nus where we will pick up again tomorrow.

After refreshments in a busy bar we caught the train back to Aosta and took a pizza back to our apartment. This will be our third and last night at the same serviced apartment. Tomorrow we will move on down the valley.
